Local 001 makes donation to Haiti
RED DEER – AUPE Local 001, which represents Government Administrative and Support workers, has made a $5000 donation to the Red Cross, to be used for the relief effort in Haiti.
The donation was moved and passed at the Local 1 Council Meeting in Red Deer on Jan. 16. Local 001 Vice-Chair Paul Currie hopes that their donation will not be the only one. “We hope that other Locals [will] make an effort to support the Red Cross or any organization that is involved in the humanitarian efforts for the people of Haiti,” he said.
The earthquake that struck Haiti on 12 January 2010 wrought massive destruction on the island, with an estimated death toll of 200,000 and an estimated 3 million residents affected by the disaster. The Red Cross efforts in Haiti include setting up first-aid posts, distributing aid and providing water and sanitation facilities.
