Edmonton presentation to discuss changes in water policy

Posted September 25, 2012 in Union Updates, Environment Committee and tagged with environment

AUPE members are encouraged to attend a presentation on Tuesday, Oct. 2 called Unsettled Waters: Examining the Implications of Federal and Provincial Changes to Water Policy. The presentation takes place from 7-9 pm at the University of Alberta.

Dr. Jerry Schmidt, who has a PhD in Geography from Western University, will discuss two contemporary challenges to the effective governance of land-water systems in Alberta. First, Schmidt contents that Alberta and Canada appear to be shifting away from policies where water is instrumental to land (i.e. the presumption that water left for nature is not in use). Second, he sees broader issues with regards to the community dependence on effective land and water governance.

The presentation will take place from 7-9 pm in the Telus Building, Room 134, on the University of Alberta campus. The building is at the corner of 111 Street and 87 Avenue. Admission is free.
