Edmonton Labour Arts Festival kicks off tomorrow

EDMONTON – The 2005 May Week Labour Arts Festival opens tomorrow with a workers art show.

Edmonton’s labour arts festival brings together the labour movement, workers and artists to celebrate and support working class culture and the contributions of artists and workers to our society.

The event includes the observance of the International Day of Mourning for workers killer or injured on the job on Thursday, April 28.

Events are scheduled through the rest of this week and up to Sunday, May 1.

Here’s a list of the events scheduled for this year’s festival:

  • Wednesday, April 27 – Workers’ Art Show, opening 7 p.m., Works Gallery
  • Thursday, April 28 – International Day of Mourning Ceremony 7 p.m., Kids in the Hall Bistro, City Hall
  • Friday, April 29 – Maria Dunn’s “Troublemakers: Working Albertans 1900-1950,” 8 p.m. Cosmopolitan Music Society, tickets $15/$10 underemployed, call 708-6555
  • Saturday, April 30 – Dedication of the Union Promenade, 1 p.m. Sir Winston Churchill Square, music by Notre Dame Des Bananes
  • Saturday, April 30 – May Week Labour Cabaret 7 p.m., Westmount Community League, featuring UK’s Banner Theatre and the dance music of the Prairie Cats Tickets $15/$10 underemployed, call 708-6555
  • Sunday, May 1 – May Day March! Celebrate International Workers Day. Muster at Tipton Park at 11:30 a.m., March to Gazebo at noon
  • Sunday, May 1 – Street Jam at Gazebo park immediately following the March, featuring hip-hop musicians, breakdancers, a BBQ and much more!
