Deadline extended for COPA members seeking funds to run for municipal office
EDMONTON – The date for AUPE members wishing to apply for financial support from the union’s Committee on Political Action to run in the Alberta municipal elections this fall has been extended to Oct. 4, 2010.
COPA has funds available to assist AUPE members who plan to run for public office in the province’s Oct. 18 municipal elections.
Elections for mayors, municipal councilors and public and separate school trustees will be held throughout Alberta this fall. Candidates’ nomination papers must be filed with their municipalities by Monday, Sept. 20, 2010.
Vice-President Glenn Scott, who is chair of COPA, said members planning to run for office must write a letter requesting assistance from AUPE. Applicants must also submit a simple proposed budget for their campaign – a form is available in PDF format by clicking the link at the bottom of this story.
The committee reserves the right to reject applications for support by candidates who advocate policies deemed harmful to the interests of union members, Scott added.
