Countdown to Aug. 27 AUPE United Way Golf Tournament is underway!

Posted August 24, 2005 in Union Updates and tagged with golf

EDMONTON – Eight months of preparation will culminate this Saturday when 163 players tee off for charity in the first-ever AUPE United Way Golf Tournament.

A total of 163 golfers will participate in the Aug. 27 event, which includes 18 holes of golf, an electronic cart, a goody bag, contests, a steak dinner, silent auction and door prizes.

“The response has been overwhelming,” said tournament organizer Scott Pattison. “It’s been a wonderful experience to this point. All we need now is Mother Nature’s cooperation.”

The weather forecast for Saturday is calling for 21 C with a mixture of sun and cloud.

Participants should arrive at River Ridge G&C by 1 p.m. and proceed to the “AUPE” registration table, which will be located outside of the pro shop. A shuttle cart will be running between the parking lot and the clubhouse for your convenience.

At that time, you will be advised of the specific hole your team will commence play from under the Texas Scramble (Best Ball) format and where and when to pick up your golf cart.

As the tournament is a United Way fundraiser, we will be selling Mulligans (3 for $5 or 7 for $10), which automatically qualifies you to play over a bad shot, and for the chance to win terrific door prizes!

“We’ve been working the phones for door prizes since January,” Pattison said adding, “I think participants are going to be excited when they see they have a chance to win awesome prizes, such as a $500 Photo Ipod, tickets to prime concerts and the West Edmonton Mall Grand Prix of Edmonton, to name but a few.

“I encourage everyone to purchase Mulligan tickets when registering, which entitles them to a chance to walk away with some great prizes.”

Pattison also encouraged golfers “not to forget to bring their cheque books and credit cards with them,” enabling them to bid on some of the “terrific silent auction prizes that will be on display during the dinner, including $2,000 travel packages, an NFL travel package to Denver, a game-worn, framed Team Canada jersey, hot air balloon rides and many more.”

Once registered, participants are welcomed to use the driving range and practice green located directly east of the clubhouse.

Participants who require golf clubs can rent them by contacting the River Ridge Pro Shop in advance at 408-8687 Ext. 3.

Please be advised, River Ridge is also hosting another tournament from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., and therefore some delays may be incurred during and following registration.

River Ridge Head Golf Professional J.P. Clymer will announce tournament rules and protocol over a loudspeaker at approximately 1:45 p.m., following which players can proceed to their carts, (identified on the front by team name), before moving on to their appropriate starting holes.

Tee-off time is 2 p.m. sharp from your respective holes. A steak dinner and silent auction will be held in the clubhouse following the tournament with door prizes to be drawn throughout the evening. If you’re drinking, please don’t drive. The bar staff will be happy to call you a cab.
