Cold Lake council unanimously ratifies pact with AUPE; union drops unfair labour practice complaint
COLD LAKE – Cold Lake city council has reconsidered its previous position and unanimously ratified a two-year collective agreement with the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees.
As a result, AUPE will withdraw its unfair labour practice complaint against the City of Cold Lake and will drop its request for a provincially appointed mediator.
“AUPE and its members in Cold Lake are pleased that council has decided to ratify the agreement reached by their administration bargaining committee,” said AUPE President Doug Knight.
“We thank Cold Lake Mayor Craig Copeland for his leadership in getting council to reconsider its previous decision and to unanimously ratify our agreement,” Knight said. “This will benefit both Cold Lake and our members who are employed by the city.”
Knight added that Mayor Copeland is right to say that the ratification vote benefits Cold Lake taxpayers by not incurring further negotiation costs.
“The job of both the city and AUPE is now to work together to create a mature and productive relationship that will benefit the city and its employees,” Knight concluded.
On Nov. 12, council members voted to reject a deal that had been negotiated by the union and their city administration bargaining committee.
The parties had signed a tentative agreement on Oct. 29, and AUPE members had voted to ratify the agreement on Nov. 6.
