Seniors care employees in Innisfail win vote for AUPE representation
INNISFAIL – Approximately 100 employees at the Sunset Manor and Innisfail Country Manor seniors facility have won a workplace vote to the make the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees their union.
AHS cuts jobs, closes seniors beds at Rockyview Hospital
CALGARY – Alberta Health Services is laying off up to 23 Nursing Aides and 10 Licensed Practical Nurses due to the pending closure of 30 transition beds for seniors at the Rockyview General Hospital, the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees has learned.
Extendicare Rally Edmonton
Around 100 members from Extendicare Eaux Claires rallied outside the worksite yesterday to bring attention to the employer’s ongoing delays in bargaining. Solidarity rallies were held at Extendicare worksites in Red Deer, Calgary and Lethbridge as well. AUPE applies for arbitration with Carewest after mediation fails
The union representing nearly 900 employees of Carewest seniors facilities has applied for compulsory arbitration after a mediator was unable to bring the two sides together on a new collective agreement.
Mother's Day at Waterford
Mother’s Day at Waterford held roses for the picketers, but no movement towards an end to the strike. Waterford’s employees will have reached the 40 day milestone for their picket line at 11 am today.

EDMONTON – Information rallies in support of AUPE members who work at Extendicare worksites around the province will take place on May 16 in Edmonton, Red Deer, Calgary and Lethbridge to bring attention to the employer’s ongoing delays in bargaining.
Strathmore volunteers ready to mobilize
Vice President Glen Scott met with volunteers in Strathmore on May 8, who will be visiting every household in the community with information and petitions in an effort to rally community support for keeping Strathmore General Hospital’s long-term care beds open.
Nursing education award winner
To wrap up Nurses Week, AUPE would like to extend our congratulations to Deb Zukowski (right). She won this year’s Rita McGregor Excellence in Nursing Education Award at the CLPNA Conference held last month in Banff. Deb is an AUPE member and a steward at her worksite with NorQuest College.
