EDMONTON – The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees’ Women’s Committee will host its annual Grandparents Day barbecue on the south lawn of the provincial legislature tomorrow at 11:30 a.m.

More than 1,500 AUPE members, seniors, politicians and members of the public are expected at the barbecue.

Media are encouraged to attend.

The barbecue will focus on the government’s continued push to foster more for-profit seniors’ care in Alberta.

AUPE Vice-President and Women’s Committee Chair Sandra Azocar expressed the importance of recognizing the contributions seniors have made in making Alberta the great place it is today to live, work and raise a family.

“Alberta’s seniors have done a lot for this province and we have a responsibility to help provide a decent standard of living for them once they reach their retirement years,” said Azocar.

“The continued push in this province to divest government responsibility of providing care to our seniors and placing that care into the hands of for-profit operators is concerning,” Azocar said. “Quality care should be available to all, regardless of what’s in your bank account.”

Politicians from all parties, members of other unions and supporters of groups like the Friends of Medicare have all been invited to attend.

There will be musical entertainment, and free beef, chicken and veggie burgers, hot dogs and beverages.
