AUPE’s Aug. 27 golf tournament sold out

EDMONTON – Registration for AUPE’s first charity golf tournament is now full.

A field of 156 participants will converge on Edmonton’s River Ridge Golf and Country Club on Aug. 27 for AUPE’s inaugural charity fund-raising golf tournament.

AUPE members stepped forward to demonstrate their “commitment to community,” said AUPE President Dan MacLennan. “AUPE members and sponsors embraced this fund-raising event from the beginning.”

Participants should arrive at River Ridge and procced to the AUPE registration table by 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27.

Participants will be given an opportunity to purchase three mulligans for $5 at that time, with all proceeds going to the United Way. Those who purchase the mulligans will be automatically entered to win a long list of raffle prizes that will be drawn in the clubhouse following the tournament play.

Each mulligan allows a player to replay one poor shot without penalty to their overall score.

“The mulligans provide participants with additional opportunities to win prizes and help out a good cause at the same time,” said tournament organizer Scott Pattison, a member of AUPE’s Communications section. He noted that a majority of the funds raised are generated through the purchase of mulligans and silent auction items – not from registration fees.

“It’s important that our golfers support this aspect of the tournament,” he said.

Tournament participants will also have a chance to win prizes for the Longest Drive of the Day (men and women); Closest to the Pin; Putting Contest (to be located on the practise green between the ninth and 10th holes); and five Hole-in-One chances.

There will also be a prize for the Best Team Theme — the best theme or costume, as determined by their golfing colleagues.

Registrations received from now on will be put on a waiting list for the 2006 event.

Those who successfully registered for the 2005 will be granted first privilege at golfing in next year’s event until May 1, 2006, at which time those individuals on the waiting list will be contacted for potential participation in the second annual tourney.

Cheques submitted by individuals or teams that did not make the tournament field will be returned as soon as possible.
