AUPE Women’s Committee encourages donations of used cell phones to ‘help hang up on family violence’

EDMONTON – The AUPE Women’s Committee hopes union members will dial up a good cause by donating their used cell phones to “help hang up on family violence.”

Used cellular phones will be collected from AUPE members and delivered to a recycler.

The committee will be reimbursed between 50 cents and $20 per phone, depending on the model being recycled.

Funds raised from the campaign will be donated to the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters to assist women and children in crisis.

“The collection of old cell phones will serve two purposes: to generate much needed cash for the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters and also to help the environment,” said AUPE Vice-President Sandra Azocar, chair of the Women’s Committee.

“With more than 70,000 members, many of whom carry cell phones, we have an opportunity to make a valuable contribution to women and children who desperately need our help,” she said.

The committee is encouraging members to seek permission from their employers to place a clearly labelled box or bin in a central location at their worksite for members to drop off used phones. Once full, the boxes should be delivered to the AUPE Chapter or Local Executive.

The project will culminate during AUPE’s 32nd Annual Convention, Oct. 23-25 in Edmonton.
