AUPE to rally health sector workers province-wide

Posted May 26, 2008 in Health Care and tagged with anc, gss, rally

EDMONTON – Hundreds of AUPE health sector workers are expected at rallies, information pickets and meetings across Alberta this week.

The events will include all classifications of health workers represented by AUPE including Auxiliary Nursing Care and General Support Service staff, who are trying to negotiate a fair contract with their employer.

“The importance of these front-line employees to our health care system is being neglected. They face continually increasing workloads and stress and they are being asked to accept completely inadequate pay. This situation does nothing to improve our health care system,” said AUPE President Doug Knight.

The events will take place from 4:00 p.m. at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton and at 11:00 a.m. the Peter Lougheed Centre, Alberta Children’s Hospital, Foothills Medical Centre, and Rockyview General Hospital in Calgary.

Another Rally will be held May 28 at the Queen Elizabeth II hospital in Grande Prairie.

Meetings for health sector members in Central Alberta will take place in Red Deer will at the Gaetz Memorial United Church Hall and in Westlock at the Westlock Inn at 6:00 p.m. May 29. Another rally will be held May 29 at the Peace River Health Care Centre.

Approximately 27,000 health sector workers represented by AUPE across the province are currently negotiating a new contract with their employer.
