AUPE seeks hundreds of volunteers for spring 2007 labour law campaign

EDMONTONAUPE is seeking hundreds of volunteers from its membership to take part in a campaign to change Alberta’s labour laws scheduled for the spring of 2007.

The majority of the volunteers will be needed to deliver leaflets, take part in phone canvasses and do office work, said Jaime Oyarzun, AUPE’s Director, Disputes and Arbitrations.

Members interested in volunteering should contact their AUPE Union Representative or Membership Services Officer.

If interested members do not know the name of their AUPE staff person, they can get it by speaking with their worksite steward or a member of their local’s executive, or by calling AUPE toll-free at 1-800-232-7284 from anywhere in Alberta.

Volunteers will be trained at courses scheduled for October in Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer and Lethbridge, Oyarzun said. Additional courses in other locations may be offered later.

AUPE’s spring 2007 Labour Education School, which will be held at the Jasper Park Lodge from Feb. 25 to March 1, will include a course called organizing, Union Organizing and Political organizing. Having attended one of the October volunteer training courses or having at least signed up as a volunteer will be a prerequisite for this labour school offering.

“This is a very important campaign, mandated by delegates to AUPE’s annual convention in 2005, and we need members to come forward to make a contribution to help us succeed in changing Alberta’s antiquated labour laws,’ Oyarzun said.
