AUPE President expresses condolences to family of Correctional Peace Officer

Posted July 25, 2008 in Government Services and tagged with local 003

RED DEERAUPE President Doug Knight expressed deep condolences to the family of a Correctional Peace Officer who died during induction training earlier this week.

Joseph Adam McKeown, 28, was employed at the Red Deer Remand Centre in Central Alberta. He died Tuesday morning at the Solicitor General’s College in Edmonton. Colleagues performed CPR on McKeown while waiting for an ambulance to arrive but were unable to resuscitate him.

“Joseph McKeown voluntarily entered one of the most mentally and physically demanding public service jobs anywhere,” said AUPE President Doug Knight.

“Our union and our province are poorer for his loss. On behalf of all AUPE members, I would like to extend our deepest regrets and condolences to Jospeh McKeown’s family,” Knight added.

McKeown became a member of AUPE Local 003 just over one year ago. Honour Guard members from the Red Deer Remand Centre and Correctional Services will travel to New Brunswick for a viewing on Monday, which will be followed by a funeral service for family Tuesday.

“Joseph was well-liked, and was known to his fellow Correctional Peace Officers as a person they could count on in stressful circumstances,” said AUPE Local 003 Chair Cec Cardinal.

“He will be missed by his colleagues in the close knit family of Correctional Peace Officers at the Red Deer Remand Centre,” Cardinal said.
