AUPE President expresses condolences at passing of former Premier Peter Lougheed
EDMONTON – Alberta Union of Provincial Employees President Guy Smith released the following statement in reaction to the news former Premier Peter Lougheed has passed away:
“I was saddened to learn of Premier Lougheed’s passing this evening. On behalf of all AUPE members I would like to express our sincere condolences to his family.Mr. Lougheed was integral in Alberta public sector employees’ transition from the Civil Service Association of Alberta into a true union capable of defending its members. That step modernized Alberta’s public service, giving employees a means by which to ensure their rights were protected in the workplace. Moreover, Mr. Lougheed understood and respected that a strong public sector was a necessary partner in the development of our province.
There were, of course, occasional differences of opinion between our union and Mr. Lougheed’s government, but they are overshadowed by his legacy: a strong, vibrant and professional public sector, dedicated to serving the people of Alberta, their health, education, industry, and economy.”
