AUPE President congratulates Lyle Kanee on appointment to Labour Relations Board
EDMONTON – Alberta Union of Provincial Employees President Doug Knight congratulated well-known labour lawyer Lyle Kanee today on his appointment as a vice-chair of the Alberta Labour Relations Board.
“This will bring labour’s perspective and more balance to the Alberta Labour Relations Board,” said Knight.
The government of Alberta announced today that Kanee would be appointed as part-time vice-chair of the board for a five-year term beginning Aug. 1.
Kanee has worked in Toronto and Edmonton representing unions in all areas of labour law, including labour arbitration, labour board proceedings and judicial review.
From 1992 to 2003, he instructed courses in labour law and labour arbitration at the University of Alberta, and in 1999 was awarded the Suzanne Mah Award by the Alberta Human Rights Commission for his role on the legal team in Vriend v. Alberta.
The Alberta Labour Relations Board is a quasi-judicial tribunal responsible for application and interpretation of Alberta labour law.
AUPE is Alberta’s largest union, with more than 68,000 members.
