AUPE members urged to cheer Oilers’ drive to Stanley Cup Finals
EDMONTON – Alberta’s largest union is calling on its members throughout the province to cheer loud and proud on Saturday, as the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers travel to southern California on a little duck-hunting excursion.
“When the Calgary Flames made their run to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2004, Edmonton fans got behind their southern NHL regular-season rivals,” said AUPE President Dan MacLennan. “Now Alberta hockey fans can rally for the Oilers, who have really become Canada’s hockey team over the past couple of weeks.”
Edmonton leads the best-of-seven Western Conference Final series with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks 3-1. The Ducks are still in the Cup hunt, however, following a 6-3 win over the Oilers at Rexall Place in Edmonton Thursday night.
“First the Flames, now the Oilers. They don’t call us the Heartland of Hockey for nothing,” said MacLennan.
Game Five will be broadcast on CBC Television from Anaheim beginning at 7 p.m. MDT.
