AUPE members encouraged to send letters of support for locked-out CBC employees to Members of Parliament

Posted August 29, 2005 in Union Updates and tagged with cbc

Edmonton – AUPE is encouraging its members to voice their dissention concerning the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s decision to lockout thousands of its employees across Canada by writing letters to their respective Member of Parliament.

“It’s completely hypocritical that a corporation which has become internationally synonymous with providing Canadians with objective news coverage, should continue to make headlines for subjecting its employees to such objectionable labour practices,” said AUPE President Dan MacLennan.

“As Canadian taxpayers we fund the CBC, and therefore we have an important role to play here.”

MacLennan encouraged AUPE members from across Alberta, to use the letter template found below, or pen a distinct letter, and send it to their area MP.

“This is an easy way to make your voice heard, and it could even help get these locked-out members back to work,” MacLennan said.

Tell your MP why the lockout is counterproductive and bad for public broadcasting.

Be sure to include your name and address on the letter and envelope. And don’t be afraid to ask for a response.

A sample letter to MPs is listed below for your convenience. It can be copied and pasted for individual use.

Original letters often have more impact, but if you only have a few minutes, feel free to use this sample letter.

I support the front-line employees who make CBC work. I am concerned that a small group of senior managers is putting the future of our public broadcaster at risk because of a misguided plan to hire most new employees on temporary contracts. The current CBC management is on the wrong track.

Please intervene to help get a fair deal for CBC employees. Please restore the real CBC to Canadians.
