AUPE members encouraged to join Palace Casino workers at May Day march

EDMONTONAUPE members are encouraged to join striking Palace Casino workers and hundreds of other Albertans tomorrow afternoon in the annual May Day March down Whyte Avenue.

May 1 is the International Day of the Worker and the annual Edmonton March is organized as part of the May Week Labour Arts Festival with contributions from a large number of unions, including AUPE, plus other progressive groups.

“The march is an acknowledgement of all the people who have given their time, their jobs and their lives in the cause of workers’ rights,” said May Week Labour Arts Festival Co-ordinator Desiree Schell. “But it’s also an opportunity for us to get together and celebrate how far we’ve come as working people.”

This year’s march will honour the courage and solidarity of the Palace Casino employees, who have been on strike for fair wages for nearly eight months.

The casino workers will close their picket line for several hours to take part in the march.

The march will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Tipton Park at 108th Street and 81st Avenue.

Marchers will then move east along Whyte Avenue to End of Steel Park — near the Caboose near Saskatchewan Drive and 07th Avenue.

Following the march, a rally at End of Steel Park will feature performances by the dynamic Edmonton group Eshod Ibn Wyza, AUPE’s own Guy Smith, and Lex and the
People’s Poets.
