AUPE members at Athabasca University ratify new three-year collective agreement

ATHABASCA – Members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees who work for Athabasca University have ratified a new three-year collective agreement that includes pay increases of 12 per cent over the full term of the contract.

Members of AUPE Local 069, who work in support and technical services at the university’s campuses in Athabasca, Edmonton and Calgary, voted in ballots counted today to approve the agreement, which contains a pay increase of 4 per cent in each year.

Pay increases for the first year will be retroactive to July 1, 2006. The agreement expires on June 30, 2009.

The agreement also includes an annual $750 Health and Wellness Spending Account and increases in weekend and shift differential pay, said AUPE Staff Negotiator Steve Nimchuk, who led the Local 069 Bargaining Committee.

“The salary settlement is comparable to, or better than, most other contracts in the sector,” Nimchuk said. “The Health and Wellness Spending Account gives our members an opportunity to choose a healthy lifestyle, for example, by taking an aerobics class or joining a health club.”

The approximately 325 members of the local are employed in general non-academic support roles.

The ratification votes were held Nov. 22 in Athabasca, Nov. 23 in Edmonton and Nov. 24 in Calgary. Ballots from a few employees who work in other locations were received by mail.
