AUPE marks International Day of Mourning today
EDMONTON – The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees marks the International Day of Mourning for Workers Killed and Injured on the Job at 11:00 a.m. today at the union’s Headquarters at 10451 – 170 Street NW, Edmonton.
AUPE will be holding a Day of Mourning seminar on occupational health and safety for approximately 45 members and invited guests. Seminar participants, as well as staff, other guests, and uniformed members of the AUPE Local 003 Correctional and Regulatory Services Honour Guard, will take part in the ceremony, scheduled to take place in the third-floor Calgary Boardroom. Members of the media and public are welcome to attend the formal ceremony from 11 a.m. until noon.
Union members throughout the world use the Day of Mourning to remember workers killed and injured on the job, the impact on their friends, colleagues and family members, and to recommit themselves to fighting every day for workplace safety. Ceremony participants today will mourn the 61 AUPE members who have been killed on the job since 1977.
