EDMONTON – Alberta Union of Provincial Employees President Doug Knight presented Habitat for Humanity with a cheque for $20,000 this week. The money was raised at the union’s annual charity golf tournament in August.

“This donation is a testament to our members, staff, supporters and sponsors’ commitment to their community,” said AUPE President Doug Knight.

Proceeds raised will help Habitat for Humanity in its mission to increase access to affordable housing. The organization helps families in need attain home ownership using a combination of volunteer construction teams and zero-interest financing.

The money was raised from participants at the union’s fourth annual tournament at Edmonton’s River Ridge Golf and Country Club. In total, 155 golfers and volunteers attended the tournament, which included a silent auction and raffle for a 2008 Polaris ATV.

The tournament’s main sponsors included AUPE, Johnson’s Insurance, Morgex Insurance, The Personal Insurance, and Servus Credit Union. The tournament was made possible thanks to the hard work of many volunteers and tournament organizers Heather Yuhasz, Wendy Webber and Gil LaFlamme.

AUPE’s 5th annual tournament that will be held at the Sandpiper Golf Course, Aug 22, 2009.
