AUPE encourages members to turn off the lights for Earth Hour

EDMONTON – Sixty minutes without light can make a huge difference for the environment, and AUPE is encouraging all its members to mark Earth Hour this Saturday.

“Earth Hour is about recognizing all the small steps we can take to reduce our environmental impact,” said AUPE Vice-President Sandy Kyle, chair of AUPE’s Environment Committee. “It’s also about the power of individuals speaking together to voice a common concern, something we as union members understand completely.”

Last year, hundreds of millions of people in 88 countries switched off their lights for one hour. This year, estimates already show nearly 1 billion people in 125 countries will participate, including 10 million Canadians in more than 290 municipalities in Canada.

“Those numbers, of people standing together and voicing the same message, should be a wake-up call to those in power that action on climate change is a priority for all of us,” said Kyle.

Earth Hour takes place on Saturday, Mar. 27, starting at 8:30 pm local time. Members are encouraged to turn off all non-essential electricity-using devices, particularly lights.
