AUPE celebrates Seniors Week

Posted June 06, 2011 in Union Updates, Committee on Political Action and tagged with senior

As we celebrate Seniors Week June 6-12, AUPE wants to acknowledge continuing care workers, who work hard to improve the quality of life for thousands of Alberta’s elderly.

“We owe a huge debt of gratitude to our seniors,” said President Guy Smith. “They helped build this province and pave the way for us. The people who care for them have an enormous responsibility. Our members take that responsibility very seriously and take pride in giving seniors the best care possible.”

AUPE’s Committee On Political Action is calling on the provincial government to introduce mandatory staffing ratios in continuing care facilities. Studies have shown that low staffing levels mean less personal care each resident, and ultimately leads to more infections and hospitalizations. On the flip side, adequate staffing makes residents feel safer and more secure.

With our rapidly aging population, it’s estimated that by 2031 one in five Albertans will be over the age of 65. That’s nearly double the current ratio. With life expectancy increasing, elderly people’s needs become more complex and they need more individual care.

“One of the most concrete ways that the government can show that it values seniors and the contributions they’ve made is to ensure that they’re properly cared for,” said Smith.

Seniors Week kicks off in Red Deer today with a pancake breakfast. Other events throughout the week are planned in communities across the province.

A directory of events is on the Alberta Seniors and Community Supports website. You can find out what’s planned in your area by going to the site.
