AUPE celebrates International Youth Day

Posted August 12, 2011 in Union Updates, Young Activists Committee and tagged with young activists

AUPE is home to many bright, committed, and active young people, and on Aug. 12, International Youth Day, the Young Activists Committee would like to spread a message of pride in and solidarity with them.

“I am so proud to see young people engaging in the union and the labour movement,” said AUPE Vice-President Jason Heistad, chair of the committee. “Every year at our Young Activists Conference, and at meetings and events around the province, we see young people getting involved and making their world a better place.”

This year, the Young Activists Committee is looking forward to presenting its inaugural Young Activists Award at the Young Activists Conference. The award will be presented to an AUPE member aged 30 or younger who is involved at their worksite or in their community in labour-related activities. Nomination forms can be downloaded from the AUPE website, and must be submitted by Sept. 12 for consideration for the award.

International Youth Day was first celebrated in 2000. This year’s International Youth Day is the end of the International Year of Youth. This year’s theme, “Change Our World,” expresses the level of impact that young people strive to achieve on both global and local levels.
