AUPE applies for mediation with Calgary Health Region

Posted May 28, 2008 in Health Care and tagged with local 095

CALGARY – Alberta Union of Provincial Employees’ Local 095 Bargaining Committee has applied for mediation with the employer after the two sides were unable to negotiate a fair and reasonable agreement at meetings from May 21-23.

AUPE Local 095 represents approximately 7,000 General Support Service workers in the health region, who are responsible for everything from hygiene to nutrition.

AUPE concentrated on special market adjustments, job evaluation solutions, general wage increases for all classifications and other monetary improvements that will address many workplace issues like workload, and staff shortages that threaten the health care system.

“We strongly emphasized to the Employer that sustainable salaries and market demand solutions are critical; recruitment, retention and reward issues must involve long term solutions, and will only be solved by competitive wages, improved compensation and other monetary incentives,” said AUPE Staff Negotiator John Wevers.

He said that although “The AUPE bargaining committee tabled a comprehensive package of proposals to expedite a settlement and ensure that the financial needs of our members are solved fairly and reasonably. As a result of the substantial gap between our proposals, the Bargaining Team has filed for Mediation.”

However, Wevers stressed that the Bargaining Committee is still willing to sit down with the employer at meetings scheduled June 12 and 13 to resolve these differences with or without a mediator present.
