AUPE President Guy Smith has issued the following open letter to the media and general public concerning the Hon. Thomas Lukaszuk’s statements in the media regarding a new review of Alberta’s labour laws:
Dear Minister Lukaszuk:
While reading Friday’s newspapers I learned of the review of Alberta’s labour laws which you have undertaken at the urging of the Merit Contractors Association, the Christian Labour Association of Canada, and a handful of other wealthy anti-union organizations and individuals.
Remembering Stephanie Stewart
Today is the fifth anniversary of the disappearance of Stephanie Stewart, a fire spotter and AUPE member who vanished from her post at a lookout tower near Hinton. The case is being treated as a homicide. AUPE mourns her disappearance and hopes this mystery will soon be solved and Stephanie’s family, friends and coworkers will have the answers they deserve.

EDMONTON – Today marks five years since 70-year-old Stephanie Stewart vanished from her post at an Athabasca lookout tower near Hinton while on duty as a fire spotter, a job she held for 18 fire seasons.
