KANANASKIS — Alberta Union of Provincial Employees President Guy Smith opened the union’s 10th annual Labour School Sunday evening by encouraging the approximately 260 activists attending to use the skills they learn to make their union “better equipped to face the challenges of the future, mobilized, more motivated and more focused.”

Budget addresses staffing shortfalls in some key areas, leaves critical shortages in others, says AUPE president
EDMONTON – Finance Minister Lloyd Snelgrove’s budget yesterday acknowledged Albertans’ desire for sustainable public services by addressing serious staffing shortfalls in several critical areas, says the president of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees.

Government employees’ bargaining committee optimistic after presenting members’ concerns to government negotiators
EDMONTON – Two days of bargaining this week between the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees and the Government of Alberta has left the union bargaining committee confident the employer clearly understands the issues that concern the government’s more than 21,000 direct employees.
In preparation for today’s budget, AUPE joined several other unions in calling for Alberta’s Auditor General to investigate why the province has not met its own targets for collecting revenue from resource extraction.
AUPE’s executive met at union headquarters Feb. 18 in Edmonton. Vice-president Erez Raz participated by tele-conference and vice-president Sandy Kyle was away enjoying the beach on a well earned vacation.
