Private surgical clinic’s bankruptcy shows why public health should be publicly run
EDMONTON – Bankruptcy proceedings against a private, for-profit surgical facility in Calgary clearly illustrate why it is essential that Albertans’ health care is provided in public facilities staffed by public employees, says the president of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees.

AUPE President Guy Smith addresses about 300 labour leaders, politicians, activists, and supporters at a lunch-hour barbecue and rally on Apr. 30 to draw attention to the need to redevelop Alberta Hospital Edmonton. Redevelopment of the site is vital, he told the crowd, because without it, treatment of patients will suffer. “Without the certainty of the future,” he said, “how can we possibly continue to do the hard work that we do every day? We need that certainty of redevelopment. We need it now.”
