Security petitions tabled in Legislature
AUPE President Guy Smith and Anti-Privatization chair Karen Weiers were joined by health sector employees from Locals 057 and 095 to present 1,000 petition signatures from Albertans protesting the cutbacks and privatization of health care security services in Central and Southern Alberta. The members were introduced by Liberal and NDP MLAs, who then tabled the petitions.
Shepherd's Care Mill Woods bargaining team
The AUPE Local 047/014 bargaining team for members employed in General Support Services roles at Shepherd’s Care Mill Woods held their first bargaining meeting with the employer on Mar. 23. The bargaining team is negotiating their first collective agreement.
Over 1,000 signatures opposing hospital security cuts to be tabled at Legislature
EDMONTON – More than 1,000 signatures on a petition opposing cuts to hospital security will be tabled in the Legislature tomorrow. The petition, part of AUPE’s Save Our Services campaign, is tangible evidence of the concern Albertans feel over the possible disastrous outcomes of downsizing, outsourcing, and centralizing dispatch of hospital security.

(Photo credit: Ben Lemphers) – AUPE Local 003 members and their supporters held an info picket on Mar. 19, 2010 to protest position abolishments and cutbacks that would affect their safety and security and the safety and security of the community. By the end of the info picket the Solicitor General and Public Security Minister Frank Oberle backed away from a decision to close admissions and discharge at the Edmonton and Calgary Remand Centres.

Johnson Inc. donates $10,000 for education bursaries
Colin Kuefler of insurer Johnson Inc. presents a donation cheque for $10,000 to AUPE Executive Secretary-Treasurer Bill Dechant. The money will go towards education bursaries for AUPE members and their families.
AUPE application seeks special officer in GSS contract consolidation talks
EDMONTON – The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees filed an application today to the Alberta Labour Relations Board requesting appointment of a special officer to assist the union and Alberta Health Services reach an agreement covering approximately 17,500 General Support Services employees.
Rural communities to protest cuts to hospital security
OLDS – Two rural communities will be turning out at the end of March to protest planned cuts to hospital security. On Mar. 25, there will be an information picket in Olds, and on Mar. 26, another information picket will be held in Ponoka.
AUPE seeks injunction halting transfer of Correctional medical staff to AHS
EDMONTON – The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees will be in court March 29 seeking an interim injunction halting the transfer of Correctional Services medical staff to Alberta Health Services from the Solicitor General Department.
