EDMONTON – Continued threats by Premier Ed Stelmach to lay off government employees if their union won’t agree to concessions completely contradict his claims provincial cost cutting will have no impact on Albertans, says the president of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees.

The premier made the threat again in a news story published this morning by the Edmonton Sun newspaper.

Edmonton musicians banding together to Save Alberta Hospital Edmonton

EDMONTON – Five Edmonton bands, including the well-known Bill Bourne, are taking to the stage at the Edmonton Events Centre at 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 28 to shine a light on the need for the psychiatric programs at Alberta Hospital Edmonton.

The doors open at 6:00 pm and a public presentation by psychiatrists from Alberta Hospital Edmonton and the community will kick off the event at 7:00 pm.

Alberta labour movement mourns loss of activist Tom Olenuk

EDMONTON – Members of AUPE were shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden death last week of Tom Olenuk, long-time labor activist and president of the Edmonton and District Labour Council. He was 57.

“Tom was a committed activist who made a tremendous contribution over the years to our movement and to the well-being of all working people, whether or not they had the opportunity to be part of a union,” said AUPE President Guy Smith.

30,000 signatures to save Alberta Hospital Edmonton land in the Legislature

EDMONTON – Public pressure to stop the closing of 246 beds at Alberta Hospital Edmonton ramped up this week with more than 30,000 signatures in support of the ongoing operation of all programs at the hospital being presented in the Legislature.

“We are extremely proud of all of our members and all those Albertans who aren’t union members, but nonetheless volunteered their time and energy to collect signatures in opposition to the government’s plan to close beds at Alberta Hospital Edmonton,” said AUPE President Guy Smith.

AUPE vice-presidents receive regional assignments

EDMONTON – AUPE’s six vice-presidents have each now been assigned regions of Alberta for organizing and worksite mobilization.
