ANC bargaining committee settles 16 articles in three days of meetings
EDMONTON – Members of AUPE’s Auxiliary Nursing Care Bargaining Committee have completed their first three days of negotiations with the employer, settling 16 articles in the process.
AUPE Staff Negotiator Jim Petrie said the articles cover “non-monetary or non-contentious” issues and were signed off by the bargaining unit and employer in meetings that ran from March 18 to March 20. The next round of bargaining will begin April 7 and continue to April 11.
The bargaining committee continues to wield a strong mandate from members to bargain “significant monetary improvements in the coming weeks,” said AUPE Staff Negotiator Jim Petrie, who leads the ANC negotiating team.
Petrie said union-proposed contract changes in the following areas remain to be discussed and negotiated:
Professional development days
Orientation periods
Hours of work
Scheduled days of rest
Salaries
Standardized paydays
Recognition of previous experience
Shift and weekend premiums
Temporary assignments
On-call duty
Transportation and subsistence
“Super Stats”
Supplementary vacation
Employee health benefit plans
Sick leave
Leaves of absence
Extended work day provisions
Professional fees
In addition, the committee has tabled comprehensive proposals on wages that represent the desire of members for significant pay increases for all classifications.
“The mandate from our members is very clear,” said Petrie. “There must be greater economic gains, increased respect in the workplace, recognition for skills and abilities, and fairness in the application of benefits.”
“Fair compensation is still our goal for all classifications, based on what other health sector workers doing the same or similar work in Alberta and elsewhere in Western Canada are being paid, and on Alberta economic conditions,” he said.
