Alberta Union of Provincial Employees awards more than $40,000 in education bursaries
EDMONTON – The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees and its corporate sponsors will award $40,500 in education bursaries this year to its members and their children.
“As Alberta’s largest union, we believe we have an obligation to not only our members, but to the future our province,” said AUPE Vice-President Lynne Gingras, who also chairs the union’s Members Benefits Committee responsible for granting the annual bursaries.
“This is our small way of assisting those who are not in a position to afford the rising costs of post-secondary education and to help them pursue their career dreams.”
This year, AUPE itself will grant 51 $500 education bursaries and one $2,500 post-secondary education grant.
Some of the union’s corporate clients, including Bell Mobility and Johnson’s Insurance, have also stepped up to help make a difference for AUPE family members who plan on attending a post-secondary institution this coming fall.
Bell Mobility contributed 10 bursaries worth $500 each and two bursaries valued at $2,500 each.
Johnson’s Insurance contributed five bursaries worth $500 each.
The union’s Members Benefits Committee reviews bursary applications, during a selection process held annually in July.
Over the past two years, AUPE and its corporate clients have awarded close to $60,000 to help AUPE members and their families pursue their educational dreams.
