Information Picket - Edmonton Law Courts - December 04, 2003

EDMONTON — AUPE members who work directly for the provincial government took to information picket lines Dec. 4 in Edmonton, Red Deer, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge and St. Paul.

AUPE President Dan MacLennan joined information picket in downtown Edmonton as more than 800 members showed their support for a fair wage increase in the current round of bargaining. Another 100 members took part in a smaller picket line at the Neil Crawford Centre on Edmonton’s south side.

On Dec. 3, members of AUPE Locals 001 to 012 held information pickets in Calgary, Grande Prairie, Peace River, High Prairie and Slave Lake.

The aim of the information pickets was to show the employer clearly that the government’s approximately 20,000 employees are fed up and frustrated by the employer’s claim that a one-per-cent pay increase is adequate and fiscally responsible.

AUPE’s position of a six-per-cent increase is modest and reasonable in light of the soaring cost of living in Alberta.

Direct employees of the Alberta government include administrative staff, fish and wildlife officers, social workers, technologists, court officials and others.
