Applications for annual Jasper labour school due by Nov. 7

EDMONTON — Applications are now being accepted for AUPE’s third annual advanced spring labour school in Jasper.

“Members’ applications must be sent to the chairs of their AUPE locals by Nov. 7, so it’s important for people who want to attend to complete their applications quickly,” said Union Representative, Education, Greg Maruca, who is organizing the conference.

More than 3,500 applications were mailed in September to local and chapter executive members, union stewards, members of AUPE standing committees, members of the AUPE Provincial Executive, Occupational Health and Safety Committee members and regional offices, Maruca noted.

The school will be held Feb. 22-26 in the dramatic setting of the historic Jasper Park Lodge.

Last year, 192 AUPE members took part in the program, formally known as the AUPE Labour Education School.

As in the past, the school’s objective is to provide the advanced training union activists need to fulfill their role and to ensure AUPE’s continued success as a union, Maruca said.

“The courses offered at this year’s school are meant to be demanding and they’re designed to help AUPE activists confront our demanding times,” he explained.

One thing that will change, Maruca noted, is the dates of the school. “In the past two years, we’ve held it in March. We changed it to February this year in order to make it easier for members of AUPE’s Education Sector to attend.”

Another difference this year is that all applications must be sent directly to local chairs, Maruca said. Local chairs will strike a committee to review applications and make a priority list of applicants by course.

Applications and recommendations must be sent to AUPE headquarters by Nov. 28.

Courses to offered this year are:

  • Advanced Steward Course
  • Leadership (two courses)
  • Re-Energizing Your health and Safety Committee
  • Lobbying Government and Changing Legislation
  • Effective Union Communication
  • Collective Bargaining (two courses)
