Mental health clinic employees’ severance pay arbitration to take place Nov. 28

EDMONTON — An arbitration hearing on an important dispute concerning severance pay for mental health clinic employees between AUPE and the nine provincial health regions has been scheduled for Friday, Nov. 28, 2003.

When the Alberta Legislature passed Bill 27 in March, one provision of the health region labour relations restructuring law allowed the new health region employers to ignore severance contained in employees’ collective agreements with the Alberta Mental Health Board.

Bill 27 transferred virtually all employees of the Mental Health Board to the nine Alberta health regions.
AUPE argues the legislation does not pertain to former employees of Alberta Mental Health Board community clinics.

Severance was negotiated by AUPE as a guarantee to these previous provincial government employees that they would be protected in the event their jobs were transferred to other employers.

The hearing will commence at 9 a.m., Nov. 28, in Edmonton.
