Thousands of burgers served by AUPE in runoff votes campaign

EDMONTON – AUPE served thousands of burgers again this week at health facility worksites throughout Alberta as part of the union’s continuing Bill 27 runoff votes campaign.

“We’ve been very pleased by the reception we’ve received this week and last from both AUPE members and members of other unions,” said AUPE President Dan MacLennan.

More barbecues will be held next week at health facilities in Hinton, Jasper, Edson, Vermilion, Camrose, Tofield, Provost and Vegreville.

“I was out at the Sturgeon Hospital in St. Albert Friday meeting members of the CUPE General Support Services local there,” MacLennan said. “Even though the rain was falling, we met a steady stream of members who wanted to talk about AUPE and take AUPE materials away with them.

“We have had a very good time meeting people and talking about AUPE, “ MacLennan added. “However, we have never lost sight of the fact that the union runoff votes required by Bill 27 are extremely important and that the stakes are high for health region employees everywhere a vote is taking place.

“These votes provide a historic opportunity for employees who have been dissatisfied with their union representation to become part of AUPE, ” he said.

“Many members I have met who have recently come to AUPE from other unions comment on the fact they get great service from AUPE and see their dues go down, in many cases from 1.5 per cent to 1.25 per cent,” MacLennan added.

The runoff votes – most of them for General Support Services workers – were called in many health regions as a requirement of the regulations to Bill 27, the Alberta law passed in March that restructures bargaining units in the province’s nine health regions.

The bill requires the creation of large functional bargaining units in which all employees in one of four job categories in each region will be represented by one union under one contract.

Mail-in ballots are now in the process of being mailed to eligible employees throughout the province by the Alberta Labour Relations Board.
