Nominations sought for 2003 Rolyn Sumlak Award

EDMONTON – AUPE’s Occupational Health and Safety Committee is seeking nominations for the 2003 Rolyn Sumlak Award.

The award, which is dedicated to the memory of an AUPE member who was killed on the job while working for the government of Alberta, is presented each year at the union’s annual convention to a member who has made a major contribution to health and safety.

“Each year’s recipient is a grassroots AUPE member whose dedication to working for health and safety in the workplace can serve as an example to other members,” said AUPE Vice-President Earl Thompson, who is chair of the Occupational Health and Safety Committee.

“This AUPE award is important because it recognizes people who make an effort to ensure that all of us, AUPE members and members of the public, are able to go to work confident of safe and healthy workplaces,” Thompson said.

AUPE locals and chapters should submit nominations to the Occupational health and Safety Committee by Sept. 12, 2003.

Nominations should include the name, workplace and contact number of the nominee, as well as the name and contact number of the person submitting the nomination.

In addition, the person submitting the nomination should provide a brief outline describing the contribution that
has been made by the AUPE member they have nominated.

Nominations may be mailed to the Occupational Health and Safety Committee at AUPE Headquarters, 10451 – 170th Street NW, Edmonton, Alberta, T5P 4S7.

Nominations may also be e-mailed to the committee’s AUPE Staff Advisor, Union Representative Sophie Parsons, at s.parsons@aupe.org, or to committee Chair Earl Thompson at thompsea@telusplanet.net.
