AUPE seeks to identify Young Activists Conference participants

EDMONTON – AUPE is now in the process of identifying participants in the union’s first Young Activists Conference, which is scheduled to take place in Edmonton Sept. 19-21.

Organized by AUPE’s Youth Mobilization Committee, the conference is open to AUPE members 30 years old and younger.

AUPE locals have been asked to identify potential participants in the conference and forward their names to the committee by Sept. 5, said AUPE Union Representative, Education, Greg Maruca. Click here for a copy of the application form.

Young AUPE members interesting in attending should contact Maruca at 930-3358 in Edmonton, or 1-800-232-7284, toll-free province wide.

“We anticipate that this will be an exciting opportunity for younger AUPE members to get involved in our union,” said Maruca, who is organizing the conference.

The conference, which will be held at the Mayfield Inn and Suites hotel near AUPE’s West Edmonton Headquarters, will include an orientation seminar, guest speakers and social functions for all conference participants.

Break-out sessions will be held to deal with four topic areas:

  • Health and Safety – know your rights and protect your rights as a young worker.
  • Taking a Leadership Role – Develop skills in public speaking, holding elected positions and being a worksite leader.
  • Making Connections – Establishing a network of younger members within AUPE and connecting with the youth community and political activist groups.
  • Expressing Yourself – using creativity through the arts (drama, music, art and writing) to say what needs to be said as a young worker.

Conference participants, who will attend one of the breakout sessions, will be asked to indicate their preferences in order of priority.
