Today is World AIDS Day

EDMONTON — AUPE members are reminded that today is World AIDS Day.

No corner of the globe is safe from HIV — according to the World AIDS Day Web site, five people die from AIDS every minute of every day.

More than 42 million men, women and children have been infected — five million in the past year alone.

According to the United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS, the highlight of World AIDS Day 2003 is to eliminate stigma and discrimination, which it describes as the major obstacles to HIV/AIDS prevention and care.

Avert.org, a British AIDS charity, says four things must be achieved to effectively tackle AIDS on an international level:

  • End discrimination against people with HIV and AIDS.
  • Educate people about safer sex and drug use.
  • Provide condoms freely to people in the developing world.
  • Provide financial and medical assistance so that people with HIV and AIDS can be treated.

“We must all be part of the solution to this worldwide problem,” AUPE President Dan MacLennan said today. “We must speak frankly and not fail to address the things we can do in our society to reduce the impact of AIDS, which is a threat to people of all ages in every country of the world.”

AUPE members are encouraged to visit these Web sites for more information on this grave worldwide problem.
