Local 052 at U of C plans member appreciation barbecue

CALGARY – AUPE Local 052, which represents non-academic employees of the University of Calgary, is planning its first-ever member appreciation barbecue for Aug. 28.

All Local 052 members are invited to the free event, which will be held between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on the south lawn of the MacEwan Student Centre, said Nancy Ritchie, the local’s representative on AUPE’s Provincial Executive.

“We’ll be there, rain or shine,” Ritchie promised. “We want to show our members that we appreciate them, and give members a chance to meet one another.”

AUPE President Dan MacLennan, who will attend the barbecue, noted that Local 052 plays a key role in AUPE’s education sector. “This is a large local with an active membership, and events like this barbecue and the local’s annual Christmas functions allow members to get together and socialize in a positive way.”

Ritchie noted that members will be served burgers made from Alberta beef. “So this event will also give us a chance to show our support for Alberta’s beef producers.”

In addition to Alberta beef burgers, participants will be have the opportunity to munch veggie burgers, listen to a band made up mainly of AUPE members and participate in a 50/50 draw, with proceeds going to the Campus Food Bank, Ritchie said.

Local Chair Dan Tilleman will take a break from his vacation to attend the event, she added.

Local 052 represents approximately 3,000 employees of the U of C.
