May Week Labour Arts Festival now under way

EDMONTON – The May Week Labour Arts Festival, which opened last night in the Capital Region, will run until May 10.

On Tuesday evening, the Workers Art Show opened at the Works Gallery Downtown – 10155 – 102 St. The show will be open daily until May 10 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The group exhibit showcases art by unknown local artists, all working people and many members of unions. The aim is to encourage work by artists who have been unrecognized and under utilized by both the arts community and the union movement, organizers say.

"The creators of this work introspectively use their own experiences and resources to identify, describe, question and possibly resolve issues important to them. These actions have resulted in vibrant and lively work. We hope this show will inform educate, enlighten and encourage both participants and viewers with much needed relevance and vitality," the show’s organizers said.

The show includes a wide variety of forms of representation including, painting, photography and sculpture. The work of the 13 2"worker artists" was collected by Edmonton artist Tom Gale.
