Burnco locks out 26 Teamsters union members

EDMONTON – Burnco Rock Products of Edmonton has locked out members of Local 362 of the Teamsters union after the union’s members rejected the company’s final contract offer.

Twenty-six members of General Teamsters, Local Union 362, were locked out at 11 p.m. March 31 after 95 per cent of the membership rejected Burnco’s offer in a March 25 vote.

AUPE President Dan MacLennan said today he plans to drop by the Teamsters picket line on 92nd Avenue between 50th Street and 34th Street. "Other member of the AUPE executive will be there as well," MacLennan said, "and I would encourage all AUPE members who can to show their support."

The Teamsters’ objective is to have the Burnco Edmonton Mixer Agreement contain language that is workable for both parties and to close an existing monetary gap with others who do the same work. Burnco Rock Products’ Edmonton mixer drivers receive less in overall wages and benefits than employees of Inland Concrete and Lafarge Construction Materials in Calgary and Edmonton, and less than Burnco employees in Calgary.

The Teamsters say the employer has transferred part of its Edmonton fleet to its non-union operation in Leduc, which is now making deliveries in Edmonton. Management and non-union employees from other areas are also thought to be staffing the mixer fleet working out of Leduc.

Local 362 said that along with the Mediation Division of Alberta Labour Relations it has requested further dates for negotiations with Burnco, but that neither party has heard from the employer.

Two years ago, the locked-out employees were part of an employee association. The association voted to merge with Teamsters Local 362.

Local 362 is also in negotiations with Burnco in Calgary. However, the company has not responded the union’s request to meet and the union has been assigned a mediator, with dates set for April 22 and 23, 2003.

Local 362 represents approximately 500 concrete ready mix drivers throughout the province and has a total of 5,200 members.
