Health regions provide information on SARS prevention for health workers, public

EDMONTON – Most Alberta health regions are now providing information about Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) on their Web sites for health care workers, other AUPE members and the general public.

According to information published by the regions on April 4, there have been no reported cases of the infectious disease in Edmonton. Two of three suspected cases in the Calgary area have been shown not to be related to SARS.

Information about SARS from the Capital Health Authority may be found at http://www.cha.ab.ca/default.htm

Information from the Calgary Health Region can be found at http://www.calgaryhealthregion.ca/newslink/sars.html.

The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety also contains a page of links to information on SARS. It can be found at: http://www.ccohs.ca/headlines/text102.html

In the event health care workers are barred from working as a result of a possible exposure to SARS, either at work or while traveling, the affected employees should contact their AUPE Union Representative for information about whether they will be paid during the period they are prevented from working.

Health regions may have different policies on what restrictions employees might face.
Affected employees can call AUPE’s toll-free line – 1-800-232-7284 – to be connected to their AUPE Regional Office.
