Long-time AUPE member to kick off Edmonton municipal election campaign tonight

EDMONTON — Long-time AUPE member Chinwe Okelu will kickoff his campaign for election to Edmonton City Council with a grand opening celebration at his south Edmonton headquarters tonight.

Okelu encourages his AUPE colleagues to join him and MP David Kilgour for the official kickoff to his campaign tonight at 7:30 p.m., at his campaign headquarters, 2708-48 St. in Mill Woods. Refreshments will be served.

“The groundswell of support this time is quite impressive,’ said Chinwe, who ran for city council in two previous elections.

A member of Local 002/002, Okelu is employed by the provincial government as a co-ordinator of intergovernmental issues with Alberta Municipal Affairs.

Getting the backing of Edmonton-Beaumont MP David Kilgour this time around gives further credibility to his campaign, said Okelu. “Having the support of key community leaders such as David Kilgour is very encouraging.”

Okelu’s campaign platform is comprised of important issues such as rebuilding Edmonton’s infrastructure, transportation, achieving balanced development, enhancing community security and effective service delivery to residents, among others.

He has 20 years of community service under his belt holding down a variety of positions with Edmonton community leagues in Millwoods and Knottwood. He also served as a member of city transportation committees, boards and coached youth soccer.

Okelu has also volunteered his valuable time working as a member on several AUPE committees, including the Local 002 finance committee and a steering committee struck to look at the essential skill sets of AUPE members.

He was a Steward for more than 10 years.

Currently, he is the Vice-Chair and Treasurer of Chapter 002.

Okelu is running for council in Ward 6.
