Nominations sought for 2004
Rolyn Sumlak Award
EDMONTON — AUPE’s Occupational Health & Safety
Committee is seeking nominations for the 2004 Rolyn Sumlak Award.
The award is dedicated to the memory of an AUPE member who was killed
on the job in 1990 while working for the Government of Alberta.
It is presented each year during AUPE’s convention to a member
who has made a major contribution to health and safety in the workplace.
“Each year we look for a grassroots AUPE member whose dedication
to encouraging effective health and safety measures in the workplace
is an inspiration and example to other members of our union,”
said AUPE Vice-President Garnett Robinson, who is Chair of the union’s
Occupational Health and Safety Committee.
“This award recognizes members who work hard to ensure that
every one of us who works, whether or not we are members of AUPE
or members of a union, can go to work confident that their workplace
is safe and healthy,” Robinson said.
AUPE locals and chapters should submit their nominations to the
Occupational Health and Safety Committee by next Monday, Sept. 27,
2004.
Nominations including the name, workplace and contact number of
the nominee, as well as the name and contact number of the person
submitting the nomination, should be sent to AUPE Union Representative
Dennis Malayko.
In addition to contact information, the person submitting the nomination
should provide a brief outline describing the contribution that
the nominee has made.
Copies can be faxed toll-free to Malayko’s attention at 1-888-388-AUPE
(2873), or 930-3392 in Edmonton. Nominations may also be sent by
e-mail to d.malayko@aupe.org.
Copies may also be mailed to Malayko at AUPE headquarters, 10451-
170 Street NW, Edmonton, Alberta, T5P 4S7. But with the deadline
fast approaching, Malayko said, nominators are advised to use fax
or email transmission.
