AUPE and Government of Alberta exchange bargaining proposals

EDMONTON — Alberta Union of Provincial Employees and Government of Alberta bargaining teams formally commenced negotiations Tuesday for a new collective agreement for approximately 21,000 direct employees of the government.

The AUPE and Personnel Administration Office bargaining committees exchanged proposals Tuesday on all non-monetary items to be considered in the negotiations.

Wage proposals will be exchanged later, said AUPE Union Representative Jim Petrie, who leads the union’s General Services Bargaining Committee (GSBC).

Negotiations are continuing today, and a more detailed statement on the first two days of bargaining will be issued Thursday by the GSBC.

More bargaining dates have been scheduled for Nov. 25, Dec. 2, 9 and 10 and Jan. 11 and 12, 2005.

The direct government employees’ contract expired on Aug. 31, but it will remain in force until a new collective agreement is ratified by members and the employer.
