Candidates for public office seeking COPA funding must file application:
Vice-President
EDMONTON — AUPE’s Committee on Political Action has funds
available for members who plan to run for public office, Vice-President
Ron Whan has reminded the union’s politically minded members.
But those members need to apply for COPA’s assistance, says Whan,
whose vice-presidential duties include chairing the AUPE standing committee.
“Municipal and school board elections scheduled for this fall
and the likelihood of a fall provincial election is also growing,”
Whan said. “I am confident there are several AUPE members out
there who are thinking about running.
“COPA has a budget to help their campaigns, but we can’t
give donations to members’ campaigns if they don’t write
a letter asking us to help them,” he explained.
Applicants for assistance from COPA must write a letter or fill out
COPA’s application form to ask for a contribution from the committee’s
budget, and they must also submit a simple proposed budget for their
campaign, Whan said.
An application form containing space
both for an explanation of why the candidate wishes to run and for a
proposed budged can be downloaded by clicking here.
COPA members will consider the applications and make a decision at the
committee’s next scheduled meeting. “We have a meeting set
for Aug. 27 in Calgary, and we will deal with any applications we have
received at that time,” Whan said.
Members seeking more information may contact Whan at 1-800-232-7284
or 930-3374 in Edmonton.
