One month’s retro pay to be delayed, Calgary Health Region tells AUPE members

CALGARY
— Because of technical difficulties with a new privatized payroll system, AUPE Local 095 members will not receive one month of retroactive pay that they are owed on their paycheques tomorrow, the Calgary Health Region says.

In a letter posted on health facility bulletin boards today, Calgary Health Region People & Learning Vice-President Margaret Munsch said that close to 3,500 AUPE General Support Service members would not receive one month of eight months’ retroactive pay they are owed on their Dec. 17 paycheques.

The outstanding amount will be paid on Dec. 31, 2004, Munsch said.

“ The impact per employee is approximately $50 — $100 gross,” the letter states.

Retroactive pay is owed to the GSS employees as a result of a wage-reopener agreement negotiated by AUPE and ratified by Local 095 members on Nov. 9, 2004.

Under the deal, members in most job classifications were eligible for a three-per-cent wage increase retroactive to April 1, 2004.

Food services, laundry and housekeeping employees were eligible for a one-per-cent lump-sum payment.

These wage-reopener pay increases were not part of the ongoing Bill 27 negotiations for a region-wide agreement for all members of the new Calgary GSS bargaining unit that was formed as a result of the legislation and runoff votes in the spring and summer of 2003.

The health region apologized to employees for the problem.
