Nominations sought for 2005 DOVE Award
EDMONTON — The AUPE Women’s Committee is now seeking
nominations for the 2005 DOVE Award, the annual award created to
honour female members of the union who have made a major contribution
to the betterment of women and others in AUPE.
“
AUPE will mark International Women’s Day on March 8 this
year with its fifth annual presentation of the DOVE Award, which
stands for Day of Validation and Equity,” said AUPE Vice-President
Krista Koroluk, Chair of the union’s Women’s Committee.
“
The intent of the award is to pay tribute to those women who take
the time out of their busy lives to make a difference by acting
as effective union stewards, spokespeople, worksite contacts and
activists,” Koroluk said.
The award, which is made of etched crystal, was created by a resolution
of the union’s convention in 2001. It has become a normal
part of AUPE’s annual celebration of International Women’s
Day on March 8.
A commemorative plaque containing the names of all DOVE Award winners
hangs on the wall at AUPE headquarters in Edmonton.
Any woman who is a current or former member of AUPE is eligible
for the DOVE Award. Nominations should be approximately 150 words
in length if written. Oral and video nominations are also acceptable.
The nomination may be submitted by any AUPE member or group of members — female
or male. While nominations do not have to be submitted through local councils,
the AUPE Women’s Committee encourages consultation.
The nomination should outline the nominee’s contribution to the betterment
of women within AUPE.
“
I encourage AUPE members not to hesitate but to look around your worksites, identify
women who make a major contribution to our union, and let the Women’s Committee
know about them,” Koroluk said.
Nominations will be accepted until Feb. 18, 2005.

Nominations may be faxed to AUPE headquarters
at 1-888-388-2873 (930-3392 in Edmonton). Mailing information is included on
the nomination form.
Last year, two winners were named for the award — Shauna Warrilow, then
Chair of AUPE’s Auxiliary Nursing Care Chapter at the University of Alberta
Hospital in Edmonton, and Tracy Quinton, Local 039 Council representative at
the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary.
In 2003, the award was presented to Mary Sillito, an AUPE activist from Calgary.
The first DOVE Award was presented to Julie Cromarty, a long-time AUPE activist
and organizer from Stony Plain.
