AUPE Good Sam members ratify new collective agreement

EDMONTON — Members of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees who work at Good Samaritan Society group homes and a day program in the Capital Region have voted to ratify a new two-year collective agreement that includes a three-per-cent pay increase plus a seven-per-cent lump sum payment in the first year.

The collective agreement ratified late Monday by members of AUPE Local 047/011 also includes a provision for a wage-reopener in the second year, said AUPE Staff Negotiator Jim Petrie.

Under the new agreement, employees’ on-call pay will rise to $2.25 per hour and $3.25 per hour on weekends from $1.25 per hour, Petrie said.

“This will give Good Sam employees the same rate for being on call as employees who come under the Good Sam facilities agreement,” he explained.

“Their rate now reflects the norm in the sector.

Petrie said the agreement also includes improvements in the clauses relating to hours of work, performance appraisals, and appointments and vacancies.

The approximately 220 members care for persons with developmental disabilities in 22 group homes in the Edmonton area as well as in the Good Samaritan Society’s Options Program, Petrie said.

In a wage-reopener, the union and employer agree to negotiate wages for the last year of a collective agreement, leaving all other provisions of the contract in place.
